The laser treatment is specifically designed to be safe for every skin type.  The laser light pulse stimulates natural growth of the collagen fibroblasts deep in the dermis.  As these little collagen factories come to life and begin to reproduce, skin rebuilds from the inside.  The result is younger-looking skin.  Results are quite visible as the signs of fine lines and sun damage begin to fade away.  As the collagen layer thickens, skin tone and elasticity improve and time lines fade to a youthful glow.

Any irregular pigmentation absorbs the light, disabling some of the melanin-producing cells with the effect of evening out skin color.  Some of the fine vessels, telangiectasia, that have become apparent at the skin surface absorb the light, are disabled and wash out of the body.

Collagen, the underlying structure of our skin, provides the youthful, tight/smooth skin appearance we know in our youth.  Due to certain environmental factors, i.e., sun, smoke, pollution, and free radicals, this structure is compromised and gradually breaks down as we age.  The result is the loss of elasticity and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.  Amy Brenner, MD & Associates, LLC uses breakthrough laser treatments that rebuild collagen layers of skin from the inside.  By selectively wounding each layer of the dermis independently, the body’s natural wound healing responses kick in and collagen is produced.  Dr. Brenner has elected to use the Syneron laser to achieve desired results.

Laser Skin Tightening FAQs

With many different cosmetic dermatology options available, patients often wonder how laser skin tightening compares to other procedures.  More effective than chemical peels and microdermabrasion, and less invasive than surgery, laser skin tightening is a virtually pain-free procedure that produces lasting results.

What is Laser Skin Tightening?
Laser skin tightening is a minimally invasive, non-surgical process that uses an infrared light source (a laser) to tighten skin by heating the collagen under the skin’s surface, causing the skin to contract (tighten).  Facial skin tightening is noticeable immediately after the treatment, and there is no downtime, making this an increasingly popular procedure.

How does laser skin tightening work?
A laser light signal is sent to the body’s collagen production system, which stimulates the collagen to rebuild.  During a treatment, light energy is gently delivered through a special handpiece to the targeted area.  Levels of energy specific to your treatment are used to maximize your improvement.  The light energy is absorbed by the targeted damaged tissue.  The settings are based on your specific skin type and clinical exam.  Dr. Brenner has elected to use the Syneron laser to achieve desired results.

Why is the collagen produced?
Collagen is produced in response to an injury or surgical intervention.  The laser energy system tricks the body into believing it has been injured and thus, the body begins to produce new collagen.

What areas can be treated?
This procedure works well over the face, neck, chest, legs, arms and back of the hands.

Who are laser skin tightening candidates?
Many people notice signs of aging when skin begins to sag around the face and neck.  Laser skin tightening is appropriate for men and women of all skin types and skin tones who wish to achieve dramatic results without painful surgery and lengthy recovery times.  The most successful laser skin tightening candidates experience permanent results as the collagen under their skin is regenerated, producing a more youthful complexion.

Who can be treated?
The ideal age range for this treatment would be anybody up to the age of 60 years old.  If you have a suntan, it is advisable to wait until you are back to your base color before undergoing treatment.

What results can I expect?
Your skin will have a more even tone with a smoother look and feel.  Sunspots will fade.  Pore sizes tend to shrink.  Fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size as the series of treatments progresses.  Usually these improvements will steadily increase with each subsequent treatment.  Patients with rosacea will see a progressive decrease in redness with the series of treatments.  If you have excess skin, you may want to consult a plastic surgeon.

Any irregular pigmentation absorbs the light, disabling some of the melanin-producing cells, with the effect of evening out skin color.  Some of the fine vessels, telangiectasia, that have become apparent at the skin surface absorb the light, are disabled, and wash out of the body.

What will recovery be like?
For the majority, post-treatment discomfort is almost nonexistent.  The treated skin may appear a little flushed and capillaries may seem to be more visible.  The flushed look soon fades away, and the capillaries appear to vanish, leaving the skin looking younger.

Subsequent to any treatment, you should follow your doctor’s instructions, avoid any harsh skin cleansers and use sunscreen.  It is always wise to stop smoking for both the health of your lungs and for the health of your skin.

Is laser skin tightening painful?
After treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.  Most tolerate these procedures quite well and can return to work or their activity shortly thereafter.  Some patients opt to use a topical anesthetic, but it is usually not necessary.

What are skin conditions for laser skin tightening?

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Red, flushed faces, or fine blood vessels
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Hyperpigmentation, including age spots, melasma
  • Enlarged pores

Are there any side-effects?

Due to the special parameters used by the laser settings, there are little or no side-effects.  The treatment has been likened to being flicked by a rubber band.  The skin may go slightly red for a few hours.  If the area is over-treated, there may be a chance of some slight crusting and blisters, however, this will resolve in five to seven days.

Are laser skin tightening treatments safe?
Yes.  Advanced light systems have been used safely for millions of treatments worldwide.  These systems treat only the targeted tissues, leaving the surrounding tissue intact.  However, some redness may occur.  In rare instances bruising, blistering, scarring and pigmentary disorders can occur with either hypo- or hyper-pigmentation.

How many treatments does it require?
Depending on the area treated, there may be a series of five initial treatments recommended that are about two to three weeks apart.  There is no limit to the amount of treatments you can undergo.  The improvement is continual as the collagen rebuilds itself.  Treatments usually take from 20-30 minutes and are administered in the doctor’s office.  After the initial series of treatments, depending on clinical result, other follow-up treatments may be desired.  Often, patients will want a single follow-up treatment at a one-year interval to keep their skin looking the best it can look and maintain the acquired more youthful appearance.

When will I see results?
As the improvement is gradual, you will not see the result for about three months.  Because you see yourself every day, it is difficult for you to see gradual improvements taking place.  Collagen can take up to nine months to fully mature, so gradual improvements will continue over this time.

How long do the effects last?
This depends on your lifestyle.  Improvements can continue over several months.  The consultation with a fully-trained technician will provide you with a skin care regimen that will help maintain improvements.

Risks and benefits of laser skin tightening?
One of the greatest benefits of laser skin tightening is the minimal amount of risk associated with the procedure.  Patients experience firmer skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles, and there is no downtime.  Skin tightening occurs immediately, and results continue to improve over the next several weeks.

Risks associated with laser skin tightening include temporary reddening of the skin, a slight chance of scarring, and the possibility of brief lightening or darkening of the skin in treated areas.
