What is Smartlipo™?

Smartlipo™ is a medical device that is used to perform laser-assisted liposuction. The laser literally melts the fat so that it can be easily removed with gentle suction. At the same time, the tissue around the area tightens, contributing to a smoother shape overall.

How is Smartlipo™ Performed?

When the patient arrives in our office, our fellowship trained board certified surgeon reviews what will happen on procedure day, immediately after the procedure as well as long-term expectations.  Pictures are taken.  Surgical markings are made on the area to be treated.  Oral pain and relaxing medications are given.  Numbing medicine (Lidocaine and salt water) is infused into the area to be treated.  This tumescent fluid helps loosen the fat beneath the skin.   Small 2 mm incisions are made.   Next, the Smartlipo™ laser fiber is inserted into the pockets of fat. The laser melts the fat cells.  The liquid fat is gently removed. The laser also coagulates the blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding, bruising, trauma as well as less down time compared to traditional liposuction. The skin is tightened through coagulation, so the end result does not leave the area with loose skin.

What areas will Smartlipo™ treat?

They following areas can be treated with  Smartlipo™

•   Neck / Chin
•   Abdomen (Tummy, Stomach area)
•   Waist / Love handles
•   Bra rolls
•   Back
•   Hips/flanks (“love handles”)
•   Inner Thigh
•   Outer Thigh (Saddle bags)
•   Knee and legs

Who are Good Candidates for Smartlipo™?

The best candidates for Smartlipo™ are healthy adults who are not significantly overweight but have fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. The SmartLipo™ patient is within 30-50 lbs of their ideal body weight prior to undergoing liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight loss method.

Who are Poor Candidates for Smartlipo™?

Liposuction is not advised for those with uncontrolled high blood pressure, bleeding disorders (on blood thinners) diabetes, and/or heart or lung disease.  Medical problems that are well controlled can be candidates for this minimally invasive procedure.  We advise our smoking patients to quit smoking at least two weeks prior to a liposuction procedure and for at least one month afterwards. We also recommend that patients maintain a relatively stable weight for at least 6 months prior to undergoing liposuction.

How Does Smartlipo™ Differ from Traditional Liposuction?

There are a lot of benefits of laser-assisted liposuction over traditional hospital based liposuction.  We believe Smartlipo™ offers patients the best results with minimal downtime and the added benefit of skin tightening than other liposuction techniques don’t provide. Smartlipo™ is typically performed under local anesthesia in an office setting.

With Smartlipo™, the laser first melts the fat, and coagulates blood vessels. The heat from the laser device also stimulates collagen production to tighten and tone the skin.  This results in less bleeding, swelling and bruising and quicker recovery compared to traditional liposuction. After the laser is used, small tubes are used to gently remove the fat.

Traditional liposuction is often done under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Traditional liposuction uses a suction device with a metal tube attached, which the doctor moves back and forth manually to remove the fat.  The fat is sucked out in its solid state, which causes more tissue trauma leading to more bruising, pain and downtime.    Since there is not a laser generating heat and tissue contraction, there is not any skin tightening that occurs.  Loose skin can be left behind after fat removal.
